Each DynaTrap Outdoor Insect Trap is coated with a paint that contains titanium dioxide. Titanium is the ninth most common element found in the earth’s crust and is a metal that is regularly found in animals and plants. When titanium interacts with oxygen, it forms oxides which can be found in sands, soils, ores, dust, and more.
The titanium dioxide coating is a crucial element for attracting insects. The carbon dioxide the coating emits mimics human breath, allowing it to effectively attract insects that are naturally attracted to this scent without resorting to using harsh chemicals. While mosquitoes and other flying insects find the scent irresistible, carbon dioxide is odorless to humans.
Ultraviolet, or UV, lights are powerful insect attractants. It seems like the second a light comes on, insects swarm and constantly bounce off the source. This is actually a phenomenon called phototaxis, meaning some bugs instinctually move away or towards a light. There are many different types of light a bulb can give off, but not all of them attract insects. UV lights tend to emit a strong, white light, so bugs typically gravitate towards them as opposed to other sources, such as the light from a campfire.

Unfortunately, UV light does not attract all species of insects. While the carbon dioxide emitted from the trap attracts insects that are not attracted to light, DynaTrap takes the process a step further. Atrakta Lures add an extra layer of insect attracting power with their main ingredient, lactic acid. This compound is produced by your body during exercise and after eating certain foods. When you sweat, the lactic acid levels in your body begin to increase. If you’ve ever exercised outside and wondered why mosquitoes seem to adore biting you, lactic acid may be the answer.
As you exercise and sweat, your body temperature typically increases as well, making you even more appetizing to mosquitoes. Each Atrakta Lure found in certain models of DynaTrap Outdoor Insect Traps are fully loaded with lactic acid. As the UV light on the trap produces heat, the combination tricks mosquitoes into thinking they are flying towards their next meal. However, they will be flying towards their demise.
Avoid the Zap
You shouldn’t be annoyed by a product that is only trying to help you and you should never feel like you could be harmed by that product. Traditional insect traps use an electric shock to zap bugs as they fly into them. While this can be effective, it also has the potential to be dangerous. Curious kids and pets could unknowingly come into contact with them and receive that same shock.
